Kate Spade Inspired Wreath

This wreath is inspired from me oh my! I remember it last year and I loved the bright pink and red color combo! Very Kate Spade-ish, don't you think?

I did two versions - a heart shaped wreath and a circle one. One for my secret sister and one for me! I like them both! This could not be easier - wrap yarn and tie bow! But it brings in some Valentines Day Whimsy - don't you think!

I could be really frustrated today - honestly, I was for a little bit. I came home from church and we found out that the motor of our refrigerator was completely ka-put! Water was all over the floor and everything was hot! But I choose to be grateful:

It is freezing outside, so I have a backyard sized freezer that can hold some certain food over for awhile.
We have saved forever and have made a lifetime habit of saving - just for circumstances like this!

Plus - it is February!! This is my favorite month and I am so glad it is here! How can you be frustrated when there are hearts, sugar, and pink everywhere? Plus - I had some awesome teenage girls drop brownies off at my home today, just because. How can I be frustrated?

Getting Ready

We've got a Lego-Maniac that is turning 7 in 2 days!

This year he gets to have a "friend" party - we alternate every other year.

I'm seeing mini-figures in my sleep!

Any free time is spent prepping for this party. We don't have any Valentines Day decor up yet - hearts don't go with Legos, I've been told!

Tie Secret Love Note

My sweet sweet husband wears a tie at least 4 days a week. I snuck one of his ties out of his closet and left a little note. This is on the back of the tie - just for him!

I first embroidered it on my machine - you could totally do this by hand if you wanted to. My hand embroidery isn't the best, though, so I chose my machine. This is on cheap felt.

I just cut a heart around it - and held it up to the tie to make sure it wasn't too big.

Pin it on the tie - making sure you don't catch the front. Stitching on the front will give away your secret!!

I stitched around the edge and was done!

I can't wait for him to find it.

You could hide a little message on so many things. I love that it is simple and subtle and secret!

There are some weeks that I have to remind myself that I love being a mother - this was one of those weeks. At least I have enough experience in raising children to know that everything is a stage that comes and goes. Everything - the bad and the good! I am grateful for this perspective and that my husband knows how to pick up the slack when he sees that I'm burnt out. I'm grateful that he can sense it before I even say anything (it might have something to do with me snapping at him a little, maybe). I am grateful that this is a new week and I have three kids that I am absolutely crazy about and only 9 weeks until my heart grows even that much more!

I love pinning away, but I try to only pin ideas that I will actually use and not just dream about. Well, there is actually a lot of dreaming but I like to think of it as practical dreaming :).

Garage Organization Part 1

I shouldn't have titled this part 1 - I think I just jinxed this project! Anyways, our garage is a mess. So messy, in fact, that once my dad drove right by our house while the garage was open knowing that Tom or I would ever keep a garage that looked like that. To my credit - it is my husband's domain and I don't really touch it.

During Christmas break, Tom started to do something about it. He drew up plans and thought about the needs of the garage - now and 10 years from now.

We already had these shelves against one wall - they are getting a complete overhaul. Look how effective they are!

He started by building a work bench along one wall. His saw is sunk a bit so the wood can lay flat.

Tom and I organize very differently and as much as I'd like to get my hands on this - it's his and this is how he likes it. He doesn't want it pretty or tidied up - he has made it clear to me this is how he likes it. And since I'm a good wife, I let it be.

Next up are these shelves - we want them more of a custom size. There is too much space between each shelf.

I'm assuming we'll be working on this for the next year. Tom works a lot and on a lot of Saturdays - which means project time is limited, but this is something he wants and I would LOVE!

Ode to Oats

The other day, my friend told me that she could never get her kids to eat oats? WHAT? We eat some type of oatmeal at least 2 times a week sometimes more! I've never heard my kiddos complain and they often choose it over a cold cereal. I think of oatmeal as a neutral flavor - how can you not like it? Then I remember when I was a kid. I was served oatmeal with milk and brown sugar. That was the only way we ever had it. My sister HATED it! I loaded up the brown sugar, of course, and tolerated it. There was really nothing to love or hate. Fast forward to my sister's baby shower about 5 years ago. There was a catered breakfast and part of it was an oatmeal bar. "Weird," I thought, "who would choose oatmeal over pancakes, doughnuts, eggs . . . " Then I looked at what they had to offer, tried it, and oatmeal became a different experience. It wasn't something to be tolerated - you could enjoy it. There were so many toppings and I had never even thought of having different toppings - peanut butter, coconut, granola, all fruits, nuts, etc. etc. YUMMY!

I have my 3 favorite ways to eat oatmeal, but there are oh so many more. The beauty of oats is that they are so versatile and you can change it to fit what you and your family love.

Baked Oatmeal - G. usually claps when I make this. It is like a warm oatmeal raisin cookie. I usually use Our Best Bites recipe - but use way less butter and sugar. Skinny taste just posted a recipe for Baked Oatmeal with blueberries and bananas that I can't wait to try.

Overnight Oats - yum yum yum! I use equal parts yogurt, milk, and oats (usually 1/3 cup each per person). Mix them up at night and put them in the refrigerator. In the pictures below, I used plain yogurt and chocolate mint soy milk. My favorite is with vanilla almond milk. Soaking it overnight makes the oats creamy like a pudding! In the morning, I stir it up and top it with fruit

We usually don't eat this much in the winter - but it is perfect for the summer!

Create your own Oatmeal Bar - every Sunday, my kids ask for oatmeal and they all have their ways that they like it. Just boil up a pot of oats (please don't insult your family by using flavored instant oats) and top it with their favorite toppings. I. likes it with peanut butter, coconut, and brown sugar. G. likes it with raisins and peanut butter and banana. M. likes it with almond butter, craisins, brown sugar, and coconut. My favorite way is apple sauce, peanut butter, and chia seeds.

Oats really "stick to my ribs." They fill me up and help me go hours without going hungry. I try to always add a protein and a fruit to mine. You can google health benefits of oats and learn all about how awesome they are for you!

We like them creamy, cold, crunchy, hot, topped with our favorite fruits, or mixed with yogurt, etc. etc. I think if you don't like them, or your kids don't like them, you aren't really giving them a chance. Tom's parents called them (and still do) "mush" and I'm not sure I could ever like something called mush and I for sure couldn't convince my kids to eat mush! That might be a reason to call off oats, but I'm not really sure even that would count - try them, eat them, get them in your diet!!

Mommy and Me Journals

Sometimes I feel that I am not able to give each one of my kiddos the individual attention that they need - that they deserve. I, of course, feel super guilty about this. At the start of this school year I decided to do something about it. I made these "mommy and me journals."

It is a simple composition book that I covered with scrapbook paper. I personalized it with their names (but of course, I'm showing you the back so you don't see their names :)

In the back is a simple ribbon hot glued to the inside cover - it's our bookmark.

My kids write a letter to me and let me know what they are thinking. They let me know what they wanted to tell me but I was too busy running around to listen. They write and I take the time to listen.

And then I write back and tell them how wonderful they are. I just set it on their bed when I'm done.

And they set it on my bed when they are done. We are averaging about one letter every other week. But I love it - I hope this reinforces how incredible they are and how much I value our relationship.

It doesn't ease all the guilt I have about not giving them individual attention - but it is one step closer!

28 week baby bump

Today, I am grateful for:

When my husband works on Saturdays, he can take some kids into his office. The kids are good and Tom can see them but still get some work done.
yummy fresh baked banana bread. My friend was over while I was making it and had never heard of some of the things we do. Is it weird to put peanut butter on banana bread? Is it weird to put cream cheese on banana bread? Is it weird to toast banana bread the day after you made it to warm it up? She had NEVER heard of anyone doing any of that and I have never thought twice about doing it.
watching my kids excel when they work hard
the gender of this unborn baby is a surprise - we won't know until it is born. I've done this with all my babies and this time it just seems a bit more exciting!
Thank you LaborLooks for the hospital gown. I can't wait to see the faces of the nurses as I tell them I have my own designer gown!

Ruffle Clutches

This year, for Christmas, I sewed ruffle clutches for my favorite 16 and 17 year olds! I wish I had a picture of all of them - I made 9 in all.

I used this tutorial from Noodlehead. It was pretty straight forward. I think you just need to do it and it makes more sense than reading the tutorial.

There is a divided pocket inside as well as a divider.

Perhaps my favorite part was looking through fabric scraps and finding fabrics that work together. Luckily, I had enough scraps!

Each one different - each one for a different girl.

I couldn't post earlier - Christmas gifts can be hard to post about. So this can go in your files of "ideas for next year." Don't you have a stash of ideas like that?

Don't let zippers intimidate you - they are soooo doable! I'm not a fancy shmancy seamstress - but I can sew straight lines and I'm not afraid to just go for it. The end results aren't always worth it, though. Luckily, this one came through with flying colors! By the time I figured out what I was doing, each bag took about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish and because of my fabric stash, I only had to go buy zippers! Not bad, if I do say so myself.

In December 2010, I got the top of this quilt put together. That's my favorite part - piecing the quilt, putting together the fabrics . .

My mom and I were looking through a Pottery Barn Catalog and she saw a quilt and said "let's make this." So we started. We picked out fabrics. Some are definitely Christmas fabrics, but others weren't. I wanted this to go in my home easily, so there are a lot of browns. I love it.

In December of 2011, I quilted it to a nice fluffy white. This quilt is big - I plan on putting it on my bed. I've never made a quilt just for me. My kids have Christmas blankets that I have sewn for them, I guess it was my turn.

Because of the size, quilting it seemed daunting. I "stitched in the ditch" and dreamed of cuddling under it watching Christmas movies at night.

Have you noticed what didn't get done this year?

The binding! I've got to hand sew this binding down, another daunting task!

So for another year it sits. I'm 2012 will be the year this quilt finally gets finished. Unfinished projects drive me batty, but so does leaving Christmas decor out!

It's going to be great - if I ever finish. What about you? Have you any unfinished Christmas projects that will just have to wait?

Berry Basket Daily Calender

This year, one of my goals is to keep a daily journal. I used to do it, but I haven't been so good lately. I was inspired by this picture from pinterest:

Isn't it cute? It is from Design*Sponge. I love how simple it is. I didn't have any vintage postcards, though. But I did have this polka dot embosser (is that what these are even called?) from years ago. I embossed 11 3 1/2" x 3" cards. They aren't bright and colorful, but it still gives the dividers a little something.

For the cards, I just cut 3x5 cards in half and wrote the date at the top. I even remembered to put in February 29th.

I spy my little helper!

My goal is to write something - probably just a simple phrase, every day. With the changes we are expecting this year, I'm pretty excited to do this.

I even think it will be more fun as the years go on!

I made one of these for my closest friends for Christmas this year. The berry baskets were from Anthropologie and I added a little more color for my friends. I, however, didn't know where I wanted to put this so I kept mine pretty neutral! Shocking!

You know it is a fun gift when you have to make one for yourself!

This is one goal that I'm hoping is a little easier with something so cute to help keep me motivated! Do you journal?

Happy New Year! I've got some big things planned for 2012! I am grateful for the group of teenagers that ate breakfast at my home last night. It was so fun to see them come in after midnight and I LOVE having them in my home. I am grateful for the Christmas break we've had and am kind of sad to know my kiddos are off to school this week. I am grateful that my husband lets me take Sunday afternoon nap every week. I am grateful that garbage and recycling pick up is tomorrow - our trash is out of control after this week. I'm grateful for a basement that holds all the holiday decorations out of sight. I am grateful for a new year and all the promise that it holds.

Favorites of 2011

As we are nearing the end of this year, it's kind of fun to see how the year went. I am amazed at the growth of this little hobby of mine. Thank you so much for spending a little bit of my life with me! I looked through the archives and pulled out some favorites from the past year. These aren't necessarily the ones with the most hits or the most comments. Just ones I like, a lot.

Dishtowel into Pillow - I bought a dishtowel of Colorado, but didn't want it to get dirty. I sewed it into a pillow and it sits on a bench in our foyer.

Bench Makeover - I bought a bench for cheap and gave it a makeover. I painted the legs, added more padding, covered the buttons and tufted this. It sits at the end of our bed and we love it.

Green Smoothie - we drink these several times a week. In fact, after all the Christmas goodies that have been coming into our home, this smoothie is the perfect way to bounce back!

Allowance with our kids - this is the way our family does allowance. It isn't complicated, it works, and I really think it is teaching them some basics of money. All kids spent their own money on Christmas presents for each other this year!

Our office - this year, we got moulding up around the room, put in an executive desk, started filling up the bookshelves, and sewed some drapes. We still have to get a light fixture, something on the walls, replace the office chair and cozy this room up.

Our Baby - yep, we've got #4 on the way. I'm not sure if projects are going to slow down as I get bigger or speed up as I anticipate no spare time once this little duckling arrives.

Q-Tip Craft

One day this winter break, G. and I found ourselves looking at each other and being bored. What we came up with is a quick craft that stifled that boredom right away.

I broke the q-tips in half and G. stuck them in a Styrofoam ball. My original thought was that it could be snowflakes. By the time we were done, G. called them sea anemones. We could have spray painted them, we could have added glitter, or at least googly eyes - but we didn't. I took a cue from my little guy and this is all he wanted to do and was COMPLETELY happy the entire time.

Well, it didn't take long before big sister wanted in on the action. She used Q-tips precision tips. They have a pointy edge and are new.

Again, break and stick.

About a half hour later:

I use q-tips a lot with our crafts - mostly for applying paint or glue. Every kid who has come in our home since has picked these up and gone a bit ga-ga over them. Who would have known? Sometimes the simplest craft are the most effective.

This is my plan in life, and especially at Christmas time. I am grateful that I have some time to slow down and really take in what this season is all about. My kiddos are now off of school and home with me. We are not traveling, nor is anyone coming to visit us. That may sound a little lonely, but I am think it sounds simple and will give me the opportunity to show my husband and children that they matter most.

Favorite Things: Fitness Edition

These are a few of my favorite things! 320 Sycamore is having a favorite things party and what a fun party it is! I've tweaked it a little and only included a few of my favorite fitness things. I am, by no means, a hard core exercise buff or health nut. It is important for me to live a healthy life and I try to make decisions based around that belief. I try to be balanced and really don't spend too much time on one thing, including exercise. That being said, here are some things that I LOVE that help me in my quest for fitness:

My Sole treadmill - we've had ours for four years now and have shopped around a lot. This baby gets plenty of miles on it each week and needed to stand up to some actual running. I love it! My husband leaves very early in the morning and I love not having to go to a gym, or run outside. This baby has made me one happy mommy!

When I do run outside, I use Nike + iPod. I put the little transmitter in my shoe and run. It keeps track of mileage, miles per hour, and can even program songs to pump me up!

I have about 5-6 pairs of shoes that I rotate. I've tried all brands and like many brands, but my FAVORITES are saucony.

I drink water all day long - about a gallon a day. These Contigo water bottles are my favorite. They do not leak, they hold plenty and are easy to transport. Drink your water :)

I've been using the Physique 57 DVDs for several years now and they do not get old! I don't like wimpy DVDs - I like them to push me and these do, even after all these years.

Cooking Light is my very favorite recipe magazine. I like the recipes, my kids eat the recipes and I end up always cooking the way they do.

We gave them as a family gift this year. You have to give them early so they can enjoy them for the month of December.

A little trim on the seam is always cute!

There are countless tutorials out there - seriously, try googling it and you'll see the countless. This isn't a tutorial, just a recommendation! My kids love getting out their pillow cases. We have them for every season and I think they are a gift that every one is happy with!

I wore these socks to church on Sunday and have had no less than 10 requests on how to make them - stat! Those are phone call or email requests, not just the casual bump-into-you-and-compliment-your-socks request.

Right now, with my pregnancy, tights are a little uncomfortable - but it is cold in Colorado. So, boots it is! These socks just dress up the boots a bit.

I used this tutorial, kind of. You can click over and see beautiful photography and give the girl credit for such a fantastic idea, or just hang out here and see what I did. It is pretty much the same thing - again, not as pretty pictures, though.

I cut a 2" slit on the back of the sock. I tried it without cutting, but they did not fit. I do have "runner calves," though, so it might fit for others.

Line up your trim and your sock. I back stitched a little at the begining.

Now, leave the trim alone, but stretch the sock as far as you can! Then sew. I mean, you sew the trim and the stretched sock together. The trim will ruffle up the sock. This is way easier than running a gathering stitch down your trim, pulling the thread, pinning and sewing it to the sock. Just pull the sock!

See, it ruffles!

Voila - 5 minutes later you have this!

I picked up the knee socks for $2.50 at Target and had all the trim at my home. Yes, the sock is different than the one I was originally wearing - I didn't plan on making a tutorial the first time. I just wanted to see if it worked and if I liked it. Now, all the possibilities are running through my head!

In November, I reached my goal of running 600 miles this year! What a huge accomplishment and I am about to toot my horn. I have every reason to stop running - foremost being I am 24 weeks pregnant, but I believe in finishing. And guess what - it is TOTALLY worth it! I am grateful for my healthy body and that the efforts I put into it pay off and hopefully continue to pay off when I'm on the other end of this pregnancy. That's all.

I was inspired years ago by a pretty cool life. Hers are pretty and I wish I had an awesome ribbon like she does.

I went the glue gun route and it is fairly satisfying and a little therapeutic.

December has just begun and I've already had a bit of anxiety looking at my to-do list. I'm grateful for my husband, who rolls up his sleeves and pitches in when I get a bit of stressed - never questioning why I think it is important to sew lace on my socks while I'm stressed.
Really, I am so grateful for the holidays and tears fill my eyes because I am so touched by so many things this season - I love Christmas carols and singing them with my husband, I love seeing the excitement in my 4 year old's eyes as we light our tree, I love the secrets and the excitement that come with them, I love that it is all centered around Christ, and on and on.

Christmas Count Down

Second, today is December 1st. This is the day we start all our advent calendars. This is my new creation for this year. Well, it isn't really a creation as much as I just copied lemon tree creations from last year. Here is the link and I did everything that they did. I didn't have mini clothespins, though. I do have lots and lots of binder clips - so I hot glued it on.

If there was every a week to be grateful, this was the week for it! What a fantastic week! I am grateful that Tom's sister and family were willing to make the drive here and for the week we were able to have together. The pie party was fairly small this year compared to year's past, but that was probably perfect for us this year. I'm grateful that I get to be a mommy and have my dearest friend as my partner and that I find such joy in my family. I know that doesn't come easily to some women. I am grateful for my testimony everything that goes with that. I am grateful for YOU! I love this blog and all the fantastic people I have "met" through it and all the opportunities it has provided me with.

Cooking the dinner might be my favorite part and I always wear this apron. In fact, I pack it up with all of our fall decorations so I have it for the next year. I also have made my daughters their own aprons.

These did get quilted and monogrammed and we get them out every November 1st.

I am Grateful for My Teacher Cookies

We just made these this weekend. We've been making them forever and we love giving them!

We've got family in town, our annual Pie Party and then Thanksgiving - have a fantastic week!

Another baby is joining our family and we couldn't be more thrilled. I am more than slightly embarrassed that I am actually posting these pictures (and I don't know if it is because of my bump or because of the fact that I was washing linens during this), but I know that Grandmas want to see.

Gratitude Pin Board

It is time for one of my favorite blog parties of the year. NewlyWoodwards is again hosting a Weekly Dare to DIY Blog Party. This week is Dare to be . . . Thankful.

I had an old glass-less frame in my basement. This never happens. I'm not the type of person to just hang onto something in case I might need it someday. I usually am always purging. It was very random that I had a frame lying around. Lucky for me, but I doubt it will ever happen again. I've had plans to make this into a pin board forever and this challenge was just the push I needed.

Tom cut some sound board for me to fit into the frame for me. I was determined to use things I had, so I went to my fabric stash. I had burlap, which happened to be the right size and match my walls perfectly! I covered the board and stapled it into the back. And, because I am super classy - I taped it to the frame. At least I used striped tape because that ups the class, right?

Next, my mother cut some leaves out of construction paper for me - helps having an elementary school teacher mom who has access to all the die cuts they have. I set out the leaves and told my kids they could write what they are thankful for on the leaves. I even gave them permission to use a Sharpie - all the incentive my son needs to write.

We just pinned them on using dressmaker pins.

We will keep doing this throughout the season and hopefully fill this up. The book sitting in front of the pin is our Book of Thanks. We set it out for our annual Pie Party and guests write down what they are thankful for in it.

We are very blessed and I love being able to find ways to show we are grateful!

Rainy Day Play from Rosie Pope

I got a chance to interview Rosie Pope, of Rosie Pope Maternity and Bravo's Pregnant in Heels, a while back. Recently, I was able to pick her mind a little bit about kids, specifically ideas for keeping them busy when you are forced to be inside.

This is Rosie's Rain Day Plan:

Creating a masterpiece with your wee ones

1. Get a large art board (they can be ordered online or from any art store e.g. pearl paint).

2. Buy glitter, post paint, finger paint, sprinkles, anything creative that comes to mind (we’ve even used grains and large stencils…it is great to let the kids search for unusual things to use)

3. Let your wee ones go nuts painting all over until they lose interest. The key is to then keep it and then bring out the next time it is rainy and then let them pain again. They can use their hands, paintbrushes, sponges and learn about making different textures. I of course always put down a lot of paper to avoid mess and have a lot of wipes on hand! Best though just to let them get really into it before cleaning up.

4. Over the course of months they will create a completely amazing canvas that you can have framed and put up in your apartment.

*I have three – we’ve worked on one every year since my eldest son was born

Yesterday was the type of day where all M. wanted to do was stare at a screen - computer, ipod, TV, movies, etc. So, we got out some larger paper and different mediums. She started using oil pastels and switched to water colors.

This is all we've got before a friend came over, but we'll save it and work on it a little more. I've got sprinkles and glitter that she will be pretty excited about!

Yarn Covered Monogram

Yarn covered letters - not a new idea, huh? Before someone asks and comments - the picture above is my inspiration - I did not make them, but I do love them. I love the colors they used and the type of yarn they used. I know they have been around forever. I bought a cardboard M months ago thinking I would cover it with moss (remember that trend). That never happened and finally I just decided I had to do something with it. The yarn covered route seemed the way to go.

I totally underestimated this project. It was a little more complicated than I thought. It included trying to figure out angles and busting out the glue gun. I used yarn left over from the Rapunzel hair I made for Halloween.

I love the texture it gives - it seems cozy and perfect for fall and winter, well, and spring if you live in Colorado.

Caption for the freako in the mirror? Anyone?

I stuck it in the back of my niche, AKA my nemesis. I really don't like these and they seem very popular around here.

After living with it for a couple of days, the M has become my favorite thing back there. It was inexpensive, cozy, only took a couple of hours and looks like it was made for there. I think next I'll tackle a wreath - no angles on that one!

Mini Bobbles - Getting Kids to Drink Water

So it is a week after Halloween and we haven't made a dent in all the candy that we got. To combat all the consumption of candy corn, chocolate, caramel apples and gummy snacks this Halloween season, I have been strongly encouraging drinking water. You know how I feel about drinking water when I wrote about it here.

Bobble gave me the opportunity to try their mini Bobbles to help encourage these healthy habits. My kids are having a great time with them - they are called the "watter bobbles" at our home. I like the size - easy to throw in my purse and easy to grab. If the bottles get too big, my kids don't like to carry them! I also really like that these filter as you drink! No more standing by the refrigerator waiting for the water to come out! Bobble filters should be replaced after 40 gallons, or 150 liters, of water passes through them. This typically equates to two or three months’ use per filter. Users fill bobble with municipal tap water; schoolchildren can easily refill it from hallway water fountains or from their home’s kitchen sink. Bobble’s filter makes that water taste better by removing chlorine and organic contaminants from it. Chlorine is common to tap water and tends to impart a slightly sour aftertaste. Bobble eliminates that aftertaste. Bobble water instantly tastes cleaner and more refreshing.

Its smaller size, design by Karim Rashid and multicolored scheme were created to make water consumption more attractive – to encourage kids to prefer water to sugary sodas and other unhealthy drinks – which is imperative during this unhealthy holiday! Office Drapes

I did add some drapes awhile ago in the office and it has added exactly the touch I was looking for. When I moved the slip covered love seat in, there was space between the couch and the bookshelves. I just wanted to fill in the gap with some pretty fabric.

Since my husband would kill me if I actually screwed anything into the shelves, the rod is a tension rod that I screwed really really tight.

It took me about 6 months to find a fabric that I loved and I eventually ordered it from Joann's, of all places. I added the stripe fabric because I had been watching so much Sarah Richardson and felt a need to mix patterns. I can't believe how well they go together and how much I like the two patterns. Baby steps, I'll be able to mix and match soon. Who knows, maybe I'll even start adding trim!

This half of the room makes me smile every time I walk past it.

It helps me forget about the two gigantic blank walls, the lack of a light fixture, and the need for a cool office chair. Also, Tom uses this office regularly and there is a desk that is beginning to look like his desk at work - piles and piles.

I lined the drapes because I think drapes hang better with a little bit of weight. Also, if I'm going to spend the time and money to get something - it's not much more to just do it right.

Halloween 2011 Successes

1. We had a pirate - with his costume patterned after his favorite Lego guy. That's what he wanted, to look like a Lego guy, with feet and a real head.

2. Rapunzel actually wore her costume and her hair. It took three tries to make it long enough for her.

3. After wanting to be a surfer girl, Amelia Earhart, I. finally settled on Hermione Granger - and was perfect!

4. Baked Rig-a-boney. Takes forever to put it together, especially when you are making a gluten free version as well as a regular version. I make it every Halloween. Full bellies went out trick or treating.

5. 4 1/2 Costco size bags of Halloween candy were given out this year. Someone told Tom that it takes a commitment to live on our street on Halloween. Our street gets very into holidays. Plus, it was a beautiful night!

5. I copied the door I found on pinterest - helped us look a bit more festive. I used butcher paper from the elementary school which made this little addition free!

6. M. came home early and spent the next half hour parked by the door waiting for trick or treaters. I told you our street takes it seriously - the longest you wait is about 30 seconds!

7. I made 6 batches of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies this month - and have requests for more! I promise you, they are the best.

8. I'm on the lookout this week for the grapevine pumpkins with lights - but I only want to pay after season prices. I'm hoping that is a success. If you find them and live around me, let me know!!!

9. Time to start Thanksgiving - which I love more than Halloween. The Advent Calendar I made 2 years ago is still a major hit!

10. I think I'm living my dream - being a mom during the holidays!

First Time Books Review

Happy Halloween!

I was invited to review a book from First Time Books and it came just in time for Halloween. We have the Halloween Adventure Book.

My little one was thrilled this weekend and has kept this book under her pillow.

The pictures are great, the story line is fun, and we are ALWAYS up for some books! The only issue was that my 9 year old daughter was less than thrilled to be a clown with bright orange hair!

PS - in case you were wondering, yes, Tom did dress up as Moses for seminary this morning. He was teaching about him and since it was Halloween, thought it would keep their attention if he dressed up. That's a black fake spiderweb that he is using for a beard! PPS - yes, I am going to get in trouble for posting this. So worth it. It makes me laugh hard every time I look at it.

Yeah, we've finally made it! Halloween is here! I am grateful for:

I serve as the Young Women President for my church. I am SO thankful for those ladies that serve on the board with me. They are hard workers with such a positive attitude and they are more than willing to do anything that needs to get done. I am grateful that I get to serve with these women and their testimonies.
I am grateful for all the time I get to spend with my little one while the big kids are in school. She isn't in pre-school yet, she doesn't nap, so it is just the two of us all day and I am grateful for this time.
I am grateful for a dear friend who dropped everything to help my oldest daughter out! I am grateful for friends who can step in and help my children and genuinely care about them.
I am grateful that it will not be bitter cold for Trick or Treating tomorrow.

Life is oh so good! What are you grateful for?

Are You Ready?

The advent calendar (before you ask - I did not make that, I bought it years ago) says that we have 4 days left! Really?

The candy jar is looking empty; the candles are half burnt. I guess it is closer than I thought.

We did make the Haunted Houses out of chocolate graham crackers already.

And I think I only have a bandanna left to find and then all the costume preparations are made. Any guesses on what the youngest is dressing up as this year?

I just have some dry ice to purchase, a door to decorate for trick or treaters, and a pot of chili to make. I guess I'm ready - are you?

Keep Kids Teeth Spookily Clean

In August, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Salzer - a renowned dentist AND a mother of four! She provided a Crest giveaway and she is also one of the founders of Braced-lets and provided another giveaway! This week, I was able to ask some more dental hygiene questions - it's especially on my mind as I am seeing ALL the sugar that is ALREADY around!

Laurel: What is the best candy for kids and their teeth on Halloween?

Dr. Salzer: Gummy candies and taffy are more likely to lead to tooth decay, particularly when they get stuck in-between teeth making it difficult for saliva to wash away. Try sticking to sugar-free lollipops and hard candies – these treats stimulate saliva helping to prevent dry mouth. A dry mouth allows plaque to build up on teeth faster, leading to an increased risk of decay and cavities. It's key to make sure they don't snack on it over a long period of time. It's better to let them eat whatever pieces they select and then get busy brushing!

Laurel: What can I do as a parent to encourage teeth brushing, especially with the tweener age that doesn't really get motivated with gimmicks?

Tweens often have their own tastes and style so it can be difficult at times for them and their parents to see eye-to-eye. When it comes to oral care products, they no longer are interested in the children's products, while at the same time adult products can often be too spicy or too big for a tween's mouth. I've found that with my children the Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health FOR ME line really works well as it is made just for them. The toothbrushes are just the right size for their mouths and the toothpaste and rinse flavors are a good balance of minty and sweet. Giving tweens their own unique, non-gimmicky, products can help encourage independence and healthy habits.

Laurel: Any tips for encouraging independence in children's oral care routines?
Dr. Salzer: I believe the best way to help children develop better brushing habits is to instill a routine at an early age. My favorite way to keep my kids on track with their oral care is to create a “morning routine” checklist for them to follow each day. It features all the steps they need to take in the morning to get ready for school including brushing, flossing, making the bed and more. At the end of every month the one with the most check marks receives a small prize. It is a great way to help your children take responsibility for their oral care with minimal prodding from you.

Laurel's thoughts: I., who is 9, really does like the Crest FOR ME line. She likes the big kid tooth bushes - not adult brushes, but they also don't have pictures of Disney Princesses. We do have a chart for our kids and it works for my girls, but my boy - who really needs it - could care less. I'm not sure my thoughts on Halloween candy - for the most part, we try to stay peanut and tree nut free in this home, so hard candies are a bigger hit. Maybe I'll get a bag of sugar-free lollipops and see if I can sell it to my kids!

Today is my baby's birthday - she is 4!! What a blessing she is to me! When I was pregnant with her, we were living in a little apartment waiting for our Phoenix home to sell and our Denver home to be built. Everything was up in the air and I was not settled. When I had my first ultrasound with this baby, there was such a feeling of peace and I was assured that this child was to come to our family at this time - no matter what the worldly things we had going on in our lives at the time!

Today she is a big girl and words can't express how grateful I am for her!

Pop Up Haunted Houses

My kids are home for fall break and it is time to do some arts with them! We ran across this idea on Make and Takes and got pretty excited. We had all the supplies, every child could do it - perfect for a gray fall day.

The oldest two cut their own houses out with some guidance. G. decided to go three story. Then, we colored in the details.

Maybe we should also include painting fingernails this fall break?

Use water colors and paint right over the color crayon. The crayon pops!

Yes, we totally listened to Halloween Party on pandora while we worked ( and yes, despite my sister's opinion - we like Jack Johnson)

We glued a piece of construction paper to the back for stability and added details. M. would tell me what she wanted and I cut them out - pumpkins, cats, moons.

This is the type of post that will make my sister roll her eyes - so just don't read sis. My grandma had a food storage room in her basement. It was lined with shelves of canned food. It wasn't my favorite food to taste, but I loved looking at it. Did everyone's grandma have a room like that?
Last week, Tom decided that we were done gardening. Thank goodness, I got a little tired of it about a month ago. He picked everything that was left in the garden. The same week, I bought a 40 pound box of apples that I had plans for. I got bowls and bowls of fresh produce that I didn't want to go to waste, so I rolled my sleeves up and spent the entire week in the kitchen. In the end, we made this:

12 pints applesauce - I flavor with a little vanilla - not cinnamon
9 quarts apple pie filling
6 pints salsa
6 pints tomato sauce
4 gallons frozen tomato sauce
1 batch cilantro sauce
4 dozen chocolate zucchini muffins
5 dozen ultimate zucchini cookies
2 quarts blanched carrots in freezer
2 quarts grated carrots in freezer
2 quarts grated zucchini in freezer
6 pints pickled beets
4 pints refrigerator pickles

Some things I've learned:

I'm not a huge canner, but if I do it in small batches, in pint size jars, it seems more manageable.
The kids are more likely to help if we pretend we are in Little House on the Prairie.
The floor needs to be mopped every day.
Jars of food that you grew yourself and then canned yourself are WAY prettier than a grocery store can.
I don't know what I'm doing, but there are A LOT of people online that do know what they are doing - thank goodness!
It really does help to have the right tools. I started out just winging it with what we had, but after splashing boiling water on my neck, I bought some basic supplies! So worth it!
I don't know why I didn't like it as a kid - we think it is delicious now!
With my daughter's allergies getting worse and worse, it makes me nervous to see food that might or might not have been processed in a plant with her possible allergies. The comfort this gives me to know where this food has come from and that it is safe, is worth it.
Don't worry - my husband kept a running tally of the money this was costing, just to see if it was cheaper. I was curious too. In the end, it was a little bit cheaper than buying store bought, but I did have to get a lot of supplies this year. Now, I already have the jars.

So that is what I did all last week. Any questions? I probably don't have the answers, but I can guide you a bit!

Easy Canvas Prints Giveaway

Grateful Sunday

WOW - what a week. I was going to do a post about my week in numbers, but I figured it was boring to read about other's 5 meetings, 10 loads of laundry, 2 doctor appointments, etc. Just know that the MacDougall family is a busy family! I am grateful for:

a sweet baby shower for a miracle baby about to be born
2 date nights in 2 weekends!
Monthly interviews with my husband where we can come together and check in with each other
dollar scoop night at Baskin Robbins and an evening with my favorite 16 and 17 year old girls
2 nights with our dear dear friends in Virginia and 2 nights with Tom's sister! We miss you!
a reason to re-use all those pom poms I made 7 months ago!
M's allergies are worse and I'm discouraged, but my little girl is such a trooper! She's awesome!
FALL BREAK - 2 whole weeks with my little ones!

The Best Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

I know, I know . . . there are a million pumpkin chocolate chip cookie recipes out there - seriously, a million! I am pretty confident that I've tried just at least half of them and they are never as good as my recipe. That is, IF you make these with the icing. The icing totally makes these THE BEST!!

In fact, when I made this batch and told Tom that I wasn't going to take them to anyone (which I usually do with sweets), I got major wife points. My husband is the opposite of a foodie - food just isn't his thing - but he LOVES these.

Actually, anyone who tries these LOVES these. I've given the recipe away countless times!

This one has my name written all over it. I better hide it!

When you make the icing, you play the game of add a little powdered sugar, add a little milk. Back and forth until the consistency is what you want. The icing hardens, so frost fast!

I'm embarrassed to admit that these will not even last a week at our home!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 cup pumpkin

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp baking powder

1 tsp soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

Fold in one bag of chocolate chips.

Icing: 3 TBSP butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 3 TBSP milk. Boil for 2 minutes. Add powdered sugar to consistency.

Blend the first 5 ingredients together. Add remaining ingredients. Fold in one bag of chocolate chips. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes. Frost when done.

Fall is officially here!

Organizing Tip - Using Velcro

How did that little break go by so fast? My husband and I took a little trip to Phoenix in the middle of September. Also, we just returned from a week in Washington DC with the whole family! So so much fun - but travel can make things a bit busy, you know?

Anyways - almost all my drawers have little compartments to organize the contents of the drawers. Usually, though, they aren't an exact snug fit and when the drawer gets open and closed, the little compartments move around:

This is my sewing drawer - it is home to all the supplies I need for the current project I'm working on.

This is solved by simply using Velcro! I use the sticky back Velcro. I stick both sides to the bottom of the container, then stick it to the drawer where I want it to go. Then, I pull the container up and the bottom of the Velcro stays on the bottom of the drawer:

Can you see that little Velcro dot?

Quick fix - under 10 minutes and the problem is solved! No more sliding around. It stays put!

This is especially handy with the drawers the kids use a lot - in the kids bathroom, or the silverware drawer .

Just thought I'd share!

Twig & Thistle

Have I ever mentioned that I work with the Young Women (girls ages 12-18) in my church? I am so grateful to get to be around them so much. I am impressed with them. I love teenager girls and I think they get a bad rap. They are not what the TV and movies portray them to be - self centered, emotional, and mean. I find that they are helpful, willing to serve, friendly, and kind. I love it!
I also love working with the other Young Women leaders. They are exactly the women who I would want to be teaching my daughters about values and being a women.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to be surrounded and supported by such amazing people!

It's Friday - the sun is shining (as always in Colorado), I'm having a girls night with my 2 favorite little girls, I ran 2 miles straight today - the first since getting plantar fasciitis, the fabric for my office drapes is perfect, my hubby is super cute . . . I'm in a good mood! Let's have a little fun!

In August, I interviewed Dr. Jennifer Salzer, a renowned dentist. How fun it was to hear that she is also one of the creators of BRACED-LETS! These are fun, durable, and wearable bracelets made entirely out of real orthodontic materials. Braced-lets have become all the craze with the younger set this summer with kids and adults alike collecting the new colors, coming up with new color combinations, etc. They are not only chic fashion accessories, but great everyday reminders to take care of your teeth (a message Dr. Salzer champions)!

Lucky us, they sent us a set to try out and a set of 7 in random colors to giveaway! My daughter has gone crazy over them, as have all her friends. When I told her that one of the sets was to give away, she told her friends that she could give them away. They 4th grade girls were very disappointed to hear it was a giveaway on this blog! They will snatch them up in a heartbeat if there is not a big turnout for this giveaway! They are super fun and make me smile!

It's little - but fun. Just perfect for this weekend.

Schoolwork Memory Bins

Our kids have been in school for over a month and I'm finally updating their schoolwork bins. I thought I would share, but since I'm a little protective about my kiddos names, you get to see the backside. Rest assured that the bins are properly labeled! I thought I had already written a post about this years ago, but I can't find it. I think it was a guest post somewhere else. Sorry if this is old news to you!

I have three of these bins, even though my little one isn't in school yet. There is nothing fancy about them - they are just hanging file bins. I chose legal-sized hanging files. When my kids are little, the artwork they bring home is bigger. A letter sized file wasn't going to do.

Each file has the grade and the teacher's name. On the front of each file, I glue a picture of the first day of school. I also have them write their name and glue that to the front (but I peeled it off for the picture). I'm not a huge saver, especially when it comes to school papers. I. is in 4th grade and she has only filled up about half her box, maybe a little more. I'm hoping that these will definitely last through elementary school and then some.

My girls get bows and my bow gets a belt - G. doesn't do bows.

These have worked so well. It is easy to file papers, it is easy to get papers out and look at them. We keep these in the basement.

This is how we conquer the school work papers. There are a lot of papers that we look at, give high fives for, and then toss them in the trash - a lot! My daughter is a gifted artist and makes beautiful drawings, but there is no way that I can save them all! She makes at least one a day! She's getting old enough to help me edit them.

New Ikat Drapes

When we first moved in our home, I hung these drapes on our sliding glass door leading out to the backyard. I had purchased them off eBay and they were never what I wanted. BUT . . . there were so many other things to do in our brand new home, that these just stayed. They are a creamish color with a floral print. I hung them on a double rod with sheer drapes behind.

When I took them down and told Tom that I never like them, he had no idea. Why did I have them up for so long? What's wrong with them?

But, on a whim, I purchased some black and white ikat fabric and just sewed some new ones! Suddenly, it became very clear how much I didn't really like the old ones.

They give this room just a pop of personality - not much, but enough.

They make me smile from every angle!

And although, I hung them up and my husband told me that they are way out of his comfort zone and they don't "match anything else," I'm confident that they are awesome!

I'm still not sure if we'll keep the sheers - probably take me another 4 years before I make that decision!

I remember this day with exactness. I was teaching a classroom of first graders, but couldn't take my eyes off the TV. School that day was optional, and parents kept coming to take their kids out. My husband had been excused from work that day and went straight home and put rabbit ears up on our TV so we could watch more. We were glued and in awe.
I am grateful for the life we now have - that my children really have comforts that many didn't think would be able to enjoy. I'm grateful for peace and security. And definitely, I'm grateful for those who fight to keep it that way.

Allowance - MacDougall Family Style

Yes, we give our kids allowance. And we have been doing so for over 2 years. Before we started, I read a lot about allowance and teaching kiddos about money. There are a lot of different opinions and thoughts regarding the matter. It can be quite controversial. I'm not trying to stir up a pot- this is how we do it and it works for us, so I thought I'd share.

At the beginning of every month, our kids get allowance. They do not have to earn it, they are given it. Chores are an expected part of being in our family, piano practicing is part of being in this family - you do not get paid for it. Tom and I had different opinions on this at first, but I think you have to figure out the purpose of allowance. Our purpose is to teach our kids about money. We use other things to teach about working hard or about responsibilities. Allowance is about money and I think it's hard for a little one to budget and plan when you don't know how much to prepare for. That can come later in life. Right now we are just working on the basics.

Anyways, we give them $1 for every year. My six year old gets six dollars a month and my nine year old gets nine dollars a month.

I stop by the bank every month and get ones and rolls of dimes. They have to pay 10% tithing and 10% savings. Everything left over is theirs to spend. I use the roll of dimes so they can trade dollars for dimes - it's easier for them to count and make change.

Tithing goes in their tithing jar and savings goes in their piggy banks.

The rest goes in their wallet, aka a pencil pouch.

They are responsible for recording every penny that comes in and comes out. I like them to be able to see what they are spending their money on.

Because they get their own money, we don't buy things/stuff for them unless it is for some occasion. If they want books from the book order, they have to use allowance.

My oldest can not save money - it burns a hole in her pocket! But, she is learning how long it takes to save up money and how fast it can go. While we were at a gift shop the other day, she was shocked that it would cost $4 to break open a rock. She knew that if she wanted to do it, we would tell her to spend her own money. She has "wasted" a lot of money on little silly things, but I think she is finally getting it and money is becoming more valuable to her.

There is nothing fancy or elaborate about our system. I even hand write their register! If it gets too complicated, it isn't long-lasting in our home. It is simple and it works.

Organizing Tip - Snack Bin

My kids need to bring a snack every day to school, and like every good mother, I make my kids responsible for getting their own snack.

To make it easier, we have a snack bin. I throw away most of the containers that snacks come in. I dump the granola bars straight in the bin, I put the applesauce cups in the bin.

What isn't already individually wrapped, I wrap for them. I buy a lot at Costco. When I get home, I separate them into snack size bags and throw those in the bin.

When it is time to go out the door, my kids just reach in the bin and grab a snack! Plus, if you knew my G., you would know that he is a walking mess. I'd rather put the pretzels in the bag, then have G. I guarantee that half would be on the floor!

Just a little tip that makes getting out the door so much easier!

Interview with Executive Chef David Eisel

Chef Eisel knows how hectic back-to-school time can get and that bringing the family together around the dinnertable can be especially stressful. He understands the need to make this family dinner a priority. Last week, I had the opportunity to interview him and he shared a quick meal that is definitely kid friendly:

The "bewitched" hour is definitely tricky around our home. The only way I get around it is to plan ahead. I menu plan for a week at a time and I try to do most of the prep work during the day. If it is 5:00 and I'm not sure what's for dinner and haven't even started, guaranteed we are having quesadillas or leftovers!

Today marks the day I've been married to my "strong and steady" for 12 years! Words can't explain the partnership I feel with Tom and the happiness our marriage has brought me.

Ruffle Scripture Bag Tutorial

A year ago, I made a ruffle bag for my daughter to carry her scriptures to church in. We've loved it and have only had about a hundred requests for a tutorial ( a bit of an exaggeration). A year later, I finally got around to it. Here you go:

I use muslin to sew my ruffles on. Cut 2 pieces to size (mine were 12x12) and sew the side together.

Next, I cut four different strips of fabric. Each strip is 3 1/2 inch wide and 44" long. I zig zagged the long edges, hemmed the bottom edge and ran 2 gathering stitches along the top.

With a disappearing ink pen, draw a line 3" from the bottom on the muslin.

Pull your gathering stitches to fit. Pin so the top of the ruffle lines up with the line you just drew. Then draw another line 3" above the ruffle you just sewed.

Keep going

There. All the ruffles are sewn!

Fold it in half, right sides together and stitch up the other side - match the ruffles. Stitch up the bottom.

I'm going to do my darnedest to explain this. Line up the side seam with the bottom seam. I move my ruler up until I can draw a line 3" long. Sew right along this line.

Trim it and do the same to the other side. This helps the bag sit flat.

Now, the outside is done! Yeah!

Next, I cut 3 pieces of 12 x 12" squares out of the fabric for the lining. One of the pieces I folded in half, laid it on another piece and stitched down pockets for pencils - They are about 1 1/2" apart.

Stitch lining pieces together on the side. Cut another strip of fabric that is 6" wide and sew it to the top. I then trimmed it so it was even with both side seams.

Pin, sew, and trim the corners in the same way you did it before!

Turn it so the right sides are facing each other. Fold the cuff to the wrong side. I pressed 1/4" of the long edge of the cuff to the wrong side.

Now, a little hocus pocus happens here. Stuff the liner into the outside bag. Shift, shuffle, move until it lines up pretty well. Fold the cuff over. Pin, pin, pin. You want the pressed edge of the cuff to just overlap the raw edge of the ruffles on top.

Stitch it in place.

Voila - a lined bag. I sewed a quick strap on and measured my daughter's body so I knew how long to make it. Then I just sewed it to the outside.

We have several request for this bag. I. gets asked all the time where to get it. It takes me about 4 hours from start to finish, which is never in one block! I hope this helps - Good luck! If you have any questions, ask in the comments and I will answer!

Grateful Sunday

Yesterday, I ran my fourth half marathon. That's an accomplish that this asthmatic girl who couldn't even run a mile in middle school couldn't even fathom! Yesterday's half, however, was less than stellar. I crossed the finish line in total frustration. I hurt today more than I've ever hurt. I've injured my heel and am planning on having it checked out tomorrow. Today, though, as I've looked at the stats and have thought about it, I'm pretty proud of myself. I scored 74/249 in my age division. Although it isn't my best run, it's not too shabby. I'm grateful that I've learned that I run for so much more than time and stats. I'm grateful that I can even run and I can push myself to do hard things. I'm grateful that I can finish what I've started. I'm grateful that my family is on the finish line with water, cameras, and cheers! So although yesterday used to be a bit of a sore subject, I'm grateful that I know I'll keep moving and keep running and keep getting faster!

Halloween Costume Review

We have Harry Potter fever around here - major Harry Potter fever! I. is on the 6th book, G.is having the 3rd read to him. The both of them play Lego Harry Potter on the Wii and are forever building legos and playing. M. always chooses to be Luna Lovegood because she has blond hair. We've watched the first 2 movies and although they want to watch more, I'm skeptical. The first two were a bit scary. Tom and I are planning on watching the final one this weekend (finally). All in all, as a family, we LOVE Harry Potter!

I had the opportunity to review a costume and knew right away which one we wanted. There were so many Halloween Costumes to choose from - the selection really was incredible! We eventually chose the Deluxe Gryffindor Robe Childrens Costume and I am so pleased. It is plenty warm for those chilly Trick or Treat nights and it looks perfect! It is well made and we'll have this robe around forever!

As the mother of 2 daughters, I'll leave you with one of my favorite J. K. Rowling quotes:"I’ve got two daughters who will have to make their way in this skinny-obsessed world, and it worries me, because I don’t want them to be empty-headed, self-obsessed, emaciated clones; I’d rather they were independent, interesting, idealistic, kind, opinionated, original, funny - a thousand things, before ‘thin’. Guest Post: Holiday Snobs!

Hey guys! We are so flattered and excited to be doing a guest post here at Ducks in a Row! Laurel has such great taste and also happens to be besties with Glitta's sister. But I'm sure that has NOTHING to do with why she asked us to guest and EVERYTHING to do with our holiday snobbish fabulousness! (right?) Laurel: this is an awesome blog, I just happen to feel more comfortable asking them because I know Glitta personally!

We're two friends from the suburbs of Denver that have a love of the holidays that borders on obsession. We may or may not be a little out of control when it comes to a party/gift/holiday/cupcake. And we don't see that changing any time soon!

Oh snobs, can you believe it's back to school time again? Makes me a little sick to my stomach. Mostly because it means the pools will be closing here in the Denver area. I'm not ready to be done with summer! But. I did come up with a little back to school craft that I thought was so cute that it kind of took the edge off.

It's this back to school board layered over my red tulle wreath! I'm all about building anticipation for big events, (if you couldn't tell) and this project fits the bill! I'll show ya how to make it so you can have one too!

I used a piece of bead board I already had cut and distressed with antiquing gel that measured 15.5 inches

First I made this embellishment with the paper pack and a couple of sheets from a book:

I measured a circle from a cereal bowl on the back of the argyle print paper:

I then made a book page accordion fold circle paper medallion. I used two sheets, about 1.5 inches wide.

Then I layered the argyle circle, paper medallion, and a cute illustration from the paper pack.

Then I made this cute faux chalkboard:

Okay, okay, so I know that you can buy little craft chalkboards for practically nothing. Or you can buy chalkboard paint to make your own. Or even make your own chalkboard paint from regular paint and tile grout! I however was just using what was already in my house at night after stores were closed. So paper and popsicle sticks it is!

Besides, popsicle stick frames seem pretty elementary school to me! But it still needed something, see?

How about that trendy stand-by the pennant banner??

And the chalkboard needs to be "hanging" from something... I know! Twine threaded thru a button and hot-glued to the "chalkboard." And then some gorilla glue so that it never ever never falls off. Ever. Never.

Yep. That's better! Then I stapled black and white grosgrain ribbon to the beadboard. Perfectamundo!

Then I just layered it over what is becoming a very versatile red tulle wreath!

So many "firsts" around here lately - G. lost his first tooth, I. had a birthday and got her ears pierced, it was the first day of school on Wednesday. G. goes to school the entire day and for the first time, he's not around for lunch! This is the first time ever that I don't have anything in the middle of the day - no napper, no kindie pick up, no pre school. It's just M. and me all day together and we had a beautiful 3 days. M. loves swimming and with goggles on, she will spend more time under the water than above the water! This week was the first time that I could watch just her and only swim. Also, it was the first time that Tom suggested we "needed" to stop by Yougurtland and it wasn't even my suggestion! Great week and I'm grateful to be around and present for them!

A Little Change

We have this little wall space at the top of our stairs on our landing. When we first moved in, I hung up some of my favorite pictures. It was never finished, but at the time, I was pregnant with M. and it was good enough.

But that empty space drove my crazy! And after I got some of my latest family pictures taken, I made a tweak.

Adding one more big picture and changing other pictures around has made all the difference in the world.

And now I see my favorite faces and not just concentrate on that empty hole. Why do these little projects that take such little time, but bring so much satisfaction get postponed so often?

Our Veggie Garden - August

This is my favorite time for gardening - it's harvest time!

We've had about 6-7 zucchinis and 2 yellow squash so far - they are just starting. The cucumbers are exploding!

We planted too many tomatoes this year. There is a jungle in there. I think I'll have to learn how to can tomatoes for the winter. I'm thinking pizza sauce for our Friday pizzas!

The peas are all done and were very loved. The beets have already been picked and pickled! The green beans have started and we just eat them steamed!

It's always amazing how quick things move in the garden!

Plus, my hydrangeas are about to burst! Yeah!

And the holly hocks are awesome. Just saying.

I'm getting together all of my favorite garden recipes and I can't wait to share.

Grateful Sunday

Sadly, our summer ends this week. My two oldest start school on Wednesday. I am so grateful for the time I get to spend with them. We have only gone camping for 2 nights this summer, but I've spent the rest of the summer just soaking up our family time. I've been very busy just trying to keep them busy. I was talking to another mother who did not understand why it makes me a little sad to send my kids to school. I like to be around them and spend time with them. I am grateful that I am a stay-at-home mommy.

Arts and Crafts Thursdays - Gooseberry Pottery

This is technically our last Thursday this summer - so I wanted to finish our arts and crafts Thursdays off with a bang! Plus, it was my oldest daughter's birthday and she has wanted to go hear for years!

There was something for everyone. I. painted a heart box, G. painted a red eyed tree frog, and M. and I. worked on a cupcake box (gluten and egg free, of course!)

Gooseberry Pottery has no idea who we are or that we were even taking pictures. They were so great to work with. I was a bit worried about having 3 kids there and just making a mess. I didn't give my kiddos the benefit of the doubt - they are awesome! Plus, this place is so kid friendly!

Little M. can handle polka dots pretty easily.

In about a week, we get these back! We are so excited!

This was a fun way to celebrate a birthday. We were asked several times if we were taking friends, and I was thrilled to hear I. always answer that she likes to do these types of things with just her family!
