Reality Organizing

Two months ago, I declared that 2013 was the year for organizing!  I made a list of organizing and deep cleaning things that needed to get done.  I tried to go for 52 ideas - one for each week.  I walked around my home and I perused my pinterest organizing board.  I ran my list by Tom and I started.

I have cleaned out every cupboard in my kitchen, I have gone through my closet and donated clothes.  I even started organizing Legos, which I know is frankly a waste of time.

My garage sale pile is growing and growing.  The thing is, though, they didn't seem "blog worthy" and I would lose interest.

Take this closet, for instance:

To me, this thing is a beauty.  You should have seen the before!  This closet is pretty large, but too far away from our front door or garage door to actually be used as a coat closet.  I struggled with what to do with this space, but it became the Junk Closet and I cringed every time I went in.   I was trying to invent something new - a mini mud room?  Nope, we've got something that works.  A desk? Nope, we have two built in ones already.  A reading space?  Nope, we don't need another place to just hang out.  So, I cleaned it, did some major decluttering and I  think it looks great.
Now, if I were a good blogger, I might remove the shelves and paint the walls.  Maybe even stencil the walls.  Everything would have labels.  The magazine files that hold all my piano music would be painted and matching.  I love to look at pictures like that!  BUT - in the end, I'd rather save up all the little dollars and spend my money on something big!  I'm saving for kitchen hardware and a backsplash.  I'm saving for a huge sectional.  and much more.

I guess I'm trying to just let you know that I'm organizing and it is awesome and that it doesn't all have to be spectacular and beautiful and major projects to be functional and organized!  I know I am not going to draw huge numbers for the closet above like I would if I had gone all out.  I remind myself that I organize for our family first and not for this blog.

What are your thoughts?

Hey! Every little bit counts. I'm trying to do 15 minutes of organization and cleaning everyday. Even that little bit makes a huge difference!

I love this idea - designating a task for each week! <3 it! And, I would much rather functionality trump an over the top remodel to show off.... just me talkin' but I think you did an awesome job with it! I love it!

Good for you! It really is the little things. And, by blogging about it others feel that it is just as important and makes just as much sense as a huge reno!

The funny thing is I think it was your organizing that actually drew me to your blog so long ago. I love having things organized so I know just where everything is. After my first daughter got married she came home one day and said, "Mom you're really starting to get organized!" I informed her that I've always been organized but my kids kept messing it up! It just looks more organized now bz there's no one here, except my husband, to mess up my system. My sewing room is insanely organized and I love it! I feel much more creative with it that way. I agree that you should do things for yourselves and not for your blog. After all, you live in your home and with your family, and not in your blog or with your blog :)

This, to me, is "real life" organizing. I've had moments of sorting and labeling but the end result while efficient and workable for me, isn't always "pretty". I love your blog... and your organization style!

Thank you so much for this "keeping it real" post! The flashy (seeming) perfection of the blogosphere can be overwhelming, and it's easy to forget that not everything needs to be covered in chevrons and silhouette cut-outs in order to be organized and functional :-) This reminded me to be proud of the projects I've done that aren't really photograph-worthy!

I love reading your blog because I get to see how a real person organizes their stuff. When I see your organizing a little something it makes me want to do that too, pretty or not. Keep it up!

Yey for you decluttering your closet and calling it "done"!
All that empty space must give you a good feeling whenever you open the door?
