I saw this dress at Target and it was all wrong. It's way too big, and way too short, but it was $6.25. So, I bought it and thought about it for awhile.
I grabbed inspiration from my daughter's dress, of all places, and made a pleated ruffle and attached it to the bottom. That quick fix gave me another 2 1/2 inches, and now it's a length I feel more comfortable with.
I used scraps I had and measured and ironed - done in about 20 minutes. Did not take the time to iron the rest of the dress, though.
I like it - why didn't I think of this before?
I played it very safe this time with a white ruffle. But I think a cute black polka dot would look adorable. or a blue pinstripe. or the cutest floral print. Maybe next time, because I'm pretty sure there will be a next time!
I think for fun I'll link up to 320 Sycamore's party. I think it is supposed to be more about decor and less about clothes, but oh well.

wow! this is such a great idea! i love those dresses too, but they are always too short. i will definitely be giving this a try!
Fantastic idea!
And,with those legs,I'd think the shorter length would look pretty fab on you too!!
That is brilliant! I think it looks fantastic and what a great fix. (It looks like you're a runner too... you totally could have pulled off the shorter length.)
:)
Wow! What a great idea! Thanks for the idea!!! & those shoes... Girl! They're so chique!
Well done, I'm sure it's super cute!

Adorable!! Love those shoes too. :)
Such a great transformation. Love, love, love those shoes, too!
I think I need this! I've got a boyshape - no hips, no waist, no butt - just straight from the bust down, so have steered clear of shirt dresses even though I love them. But this??? I want to figure out how to make it work.
And at the risk of sounding creepy, you've got great legs!
I agree about the legs. Looking hot! Nice work:)
very cute! love the shoes too!
Great idea! Looks so cute!
laurel, that is so cute! love it! i hate skirts and dresses that are too short, so it's a great solution to hide my chubby knees!
That is so cute! I love the pleated ruffle. And your shoes are pretty darn cute too!
Laurel, I think that really makes the dress something special!
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!
Great fix!! I love those dresses BUT - they always look okay standing up. Sitting down you feel like you are showing every bit and piece you own!
This is darling. Great fix on a great find, oh, and great shoes!! :):)
you know what they say - modest is hottest! Love this little sewing addition:) Thanks for blog love - I TOO love a pumpkin with personality - even if I have to mod podge it on there myself!
Love the pleats, love the shoes!
Laurel,
I LOVE this. It looks like a million bucks and that you got it at a high end boutique. The shoes complete the ensemble and they are the same ones we're wearing for my sister's wedding. :) You have commented on almost every single link in this party...you rock! Have a great weekend~
wow, so cute. i've got a skirt that needs lengthening. if I could just get around to doing it. Love those shoes.
i'm here from just a girl
I love the pleats and always run into the same problem. Great idea!
Laurel, you are truly brilliant. I'll never look at a Target too-short dress or skirt the same way again. Hooray! This is too cute. And do the polka dots next. I love polka dots.
ok I sooo want to do this -but confession- I have NO CLUE how to sew pleats. :-(
such a good idea. I have the same problem with short dresses. I am 6 foot tall. and that dress from Target is cute, cute, cute!
I love what you did with the dress. I think it really gave it a touch of finish and lady like feel to balance out the casualness of it. I love your shoes as well!
I love it....Just my style.
Great Idea.
LOVE those shoes - where are they from?
I have a navy shirt dress from The Gap and I always try it on in hopes ... but same as you, with not much luck. Too long for pants (atleast with my body) and too short for dress. Perhaps I will try this variation. thanks
I agree with everyone else: if MY legs looked like that, nobody would ever notice a too short hemline. What you're really saying is that not only are you creative, but you're gorgeous too.....so unfair....
What a great idea! I have this problem all the time. I will definately be keeping my eyes open for a dress to fix!
okay, first: great fix--love the pleats!
second--uh-hello legs!!! lovely! ;o)
and third--i see you picked up some shoesies at tar-jay too! the same ones beckoned me on a recent trip...and the clearance price certainly helped them find their way into my cart! lol!
SO cute! Love the shoes too. We need a full pic though to get the whole effect. :)
Nice job!
What a GREAT idea!!!! I love it! I'll have to keep my eye out for a sale or two.
