Evolution of an Office - Bookshelves

I showed you my blank slate of an office. Right after Christmas, we started working on it. Tom's parents came for a visit and started working on the bookshelves right away. I've been collecting pictures forever and they finally had a good idea of what I wanted. Between the two of them and our friend down the street with the right tools, they stayed busy for a whole week.

I totally underestimated how complicated of a project this was. When the baseboards came off, and the carpet was ripped back, I knew it was serious.

They flank the window and go up almost 11 feet high. I'm not sure I have enough to fill this up right now, but having too many bookshelves is not a bad thing. Go big or go home - right?
This week, we're going to finish all the spackle and the sanding and start the priming and the painting. Tom's dad is building cabinet doors for the bottom cabinets at his home where he has the tools he loves and then will get them back to us somehow. Crown moulding . . . I do love you. I dream of these bookshelves. Thinking about them takes me to my happy place.
Oh - for you observant ones. We did start painting. I wanted the color to show through the bookshelves, which complicated this project even more. Tom said it would have been so much easier if it had a back. They could have added a back and I could have just painted it before they added it - oops. The color is called Smooth Stone from Glidden. We still have a lot more painting to go, so you'll see better pictures as I get to that spot.

Oh, I cannot wait to see your finished product! They are already amazing. So did end up having to rework any vents in order to do this?

I'm in love with your shelves. They're so high and fill up the whole wall. Even a window seat. Love.

I love them! You don't need to fill them with books, you can put some interesting things in there mixed in with the books. I wish the paint showed through mine, but I do notice the books sometimes leave marks on the wall, so maybe not. Can't wait to see yours finished!

Those are awesome. That is exactly what I want to do to my front room. What do you think your total cost is going to be?

WOW!!! They are just gorgeous already. :) We have a similar window/wall in my oldest's room. When she moves in to bunk with her little sis, I could see us giving something like this a shot. Anything with extra storage is worth it. So impressed! :) Thanks for the visit last night. :)

Oh my gosh. I LOVE IT! I am currently begging my hubby for a built in bookshelf in my dining room. This is just what he needs to see, how beautiful it can be. I will be checking back to see all of the progress.

Eeek! So excited for you but also a little spooked! I just think it might be a little too crazy how many things we do or think of at the same time. My husband was building built in bookcases this weekend also...How crazy is that!! Ours were not as big of a project and I know the feeling you must be having right now, so close you can taste it! What a great investment plus storage, plus uniqueness plus a bold statement when you walk into that room! So excited for you!

Oh.My.Gosh. I love them! What a project. I'm trying to get Matt to make me a built in storage cabinet in our water closet (but I think the pocket door has to come first...) you can NEVER have too many bookshelves!

These are fabulous! And no, you don't want them all crammed full right away; some breathing space amongst the books you do have will look wonderful.

Oh. My. Word. What!?? I just posted a comment on your sideboard which led me to this. I was saying I want a sideboard for my 'fireplace' room and the only other thing I needed in the same room were bookshelves flanking that fireplace! Do you think you could post a tutorial, even just a written on how to do this? I love, love, love it. And, again, it's exactly what I've been looking forward! You rock.
