Paperwhites - Easy Gift

Have you forced paperwhites before? We do them every year and they are practically fool-proof. They make such a perfect gift at this time of year- so easy, you can make them in bulk, they are unique, and inexpensive.

I buy empty quart size paint cans at Home Depot and then wrap them with cute wrapping paper. Just cut a strip and use double sided tape.
Put in some potting soil, and plant your bulbs. Keep the soil moist. I put the lids on them and keep them in the garage until they start sprouting.

Bring them inside and water.

This is after 2 weeks:

My husband hates the smell, but I love having flowers in our home in the winter. They do tend to get quite tall, but I just read that you can mix one part 70% rubbing alcohol and 10 parts water to water them with after they grow a couple inches (link). I'm planning on trying it this year to stunt their growth.

This year, I handed them out to all who came to our pie party. Plus, they are going to all my piano students families after our Christmas recital on Friday.

I started these before Thanksgiving and hope to have blooms by Christmas, but I also think if you started this now and have blooms after Christmas - good too.

PS - I was talking to Tom last night and he wanted to make sure I was portraying myself on this little blog and not some personna that really isn't me. So, in order to try and follow his council, here is my desk in all it's messy glory. Do you still love me?

Love this idea! I've never forced paperwhites - but I'm thinking about doing it next year now.

I've always wanted to force a plant, but all I succeed in doing is forcing it to die. I don't have a green thumb. Your desk is spotless compared to mine!

You are so cool, Laurel. I love the paint cans idea. I have to try forcing them now. =) I have very bad luck with houseplants, but I'll give it a shot.

I've never had paperwhites before but I like this idea. And the desk? Looks familiar :-) glad to see you're just as human as I am.

LOVE your use of paintcans!!

Mr. FC says the same thing to me but in a different direction. He's all, "Make sure your readers know how truly maniacal you are when it comes to having things just so."

But then I'd probably have no willing readers so, I try to reel it in just a scosche. But just a scosche. =]

How much do you think these cost? Per can/flower? I am oh sooo not crafty, nor domestic, but these -- well -- look like a possibility. Thanks for the very cute and creative idea!

I've never done that but always mean too. I love the idea of paper-covered paint cans! And don't worry my desks at school, home and my craft table are all a mess right now.

This is brilliant! This is why you have a blog with followers growing by the day. Very cool, I didn't even know it was possible to do such a thing. And I did wonder if you had completely conquered all your messy habits with all your organizational wisdom of late. That's my girl.

I have never done those. And funny you post this, in the kids school today they were learning about plants from a seed and watched them grow in a sped up version. I think they would love to help with something like this and watch them grow.

That is a darling idea. I have some that just started blooming on my kitchen island today. I love how white and pure they look.

I love the idea of giving them out and the paper you used is so cute with the polka dots!

Oh heavens Laurel if that's a messy desk then I better call Clean House to help with mine, lol! Your desk looks fine. My kids read my blog so they're the ones that keep me real and honest. My husband...well he could not care less what I posted. Hmmmm, I could have fun knowing there'd be no repercussions, lol! I really like your flower idea and the idea of putting them in paint cans decorated with the paper. Very fun idea!

Great idea! I will have to remember this for next year.
Good thing your hubby's around to keep it real for the rest of us! ;o)

What a great gift idea! I wonder if someone who has a thumb as black as mine could make it work?? ;)

LOVE the idea of giving something alive for the Holidays.

I love this! What a great idea! So it takes about 2 weeks to get them to start? How long until they bloom?

Seriously, I am doing a project with buckets I bought at Home Depot last weekend. But I saw those paint cans and thought, too cute, what can I use them for? Now I have the answer! I have to admit, I have never grown anything - better late than never right?!

I have to say that paperwhites are not one of my favorite flowers because I'm not a fan of their smell, but they really are so pretty to look at in pictures! Also, I can't believe that on top of everything else you do, you teach piano lessons, that's so amazing!

Beth@The Stories of A to Z said...

What a great idea! I honestly didn't even know what a paperwhite was until reading this entry, so no, I've never tried to force them or talk them into anything :). But after seeing how pretty they are I may just try my hand at growing some. But they stink? Hmmm. Not sure I want a stinking flower.

Good for you for trying to keep it real here on the blog but if that desk is considered a "mess" then you're still looking pretty good to most of us!!

Wonderful idea - and it's something I would enjoy receiving as a gift!

It's my first visit to your blog and I'm enjoying looking around! :)

Yes, I still love you...that is what my dining room table looks like every day until about 15 minutes before my husband gets home. lol

I'm a sucker for anything polka dots (and especially red and white), so you know I'll be trying this!
