Linking up to TDC's

If you are visiting for the first time, check out my other organizing posts here.
I'm a big believer that every home needs a command center. A landing zone, grand central station . . . call it what you will, but I bet you have it whether you know it or not. Now, it would function a whole lot better if it was organized, so let's get crackin'.

Here's my command center - nothing fancy, but totally functioning. It's in my kitchen - all command centers should be easily accessible. I'm lucky enough to have this, but it would work in an office, on a wall by the garage door, at a console table. Anywhere that is easy to get to.

Every command center should include:
- Calendar
- Message Board
- Place to throw your keys
- An out-box
- A place for everyone to put their papers.
Let's dissect, shall we?
This is my calendar purchased from here. I've used it for a couple of years and it works well for me. My kids are pretty little and I still control 90% of their calendar needs, so no need to have a big one where everyone can add to it. As they get older, I'll probably do that. Usually on Sundays, Mr. Engineer and I sit down and calendar for the week.
I use a 5x7" spiral notebook as my message board. Remember, my kids are little and aren't really writing or reading messages - so this works for us. I've seen chalkboards, whiteboards . . . tons of different types of message boards.
We throw our keys here - and have for years. In our old home, we also threw our keys in this little box. We keep it in a cubby above the desk.

Next to our keys, is this cubby - our out box. We put out-going mail, videos to return, and such.

I have a file drawer that holds files for everyone. In it there is a file for each person, bills to pay, and store coupons. Those files pretty much take care of all the paper work in our home. At least once a week, we go through them and clean them out (Obviously, I haven't done it this week, yet).
If you don't have a file drawer, you can use a box. You can use clipboards, baskets, in/out boxes . . just so you have a place to put people's papers. You know they are going to have them!I also have a cubby for homework in our command center. Both I. and G.'s homework comes in a folder, which we just throw in this cubby.
So . . . let's say I. gets home from school. She empties her backpack and throws it on the desk. Of course, ideally she wouldn't do that - but she does. I grab her homework and put it in the cubby. If there are any papers I think are worthy enough to actually save, I shove it in her file. Any papers that have a date on it get set on my calendar until I can get to it.
Let say . . . I get home from getting the mail. I throw away all the ads and credit card stuff before I even get in the house. One quick sort and put mail in the files. It takes one minute and the piles are gone.

Let's say . . .Tom is looking for keys . . . easy to grab them.
This is what works in our home, it is very simple but gets rid of the dump that comes when people come home. I don't need things perfect - just functioning. The papers aren't filed perfectly, the keys are just thrown in the box. The thing is, though, everything has a place.
This is what it usually looks like during the day:

When I clean the kitchen at night, the desk also gets a quick clean.
This works for us, do you have something similar?

I totally need something like this. If I were half as organized as this maybe my kitchen counter wouldn't always have a pile on it like it does. BTW I found your blog when you commented one time on Amberly's blog. You have great ideas. I'm not surprised though--you always were talented. ;)
this looks great! I have command centers all over the house. We don't have a desk like your's. Lucky duck ;)
I get way more excited about organization plans than any normal person should, and this post had me glued to the screen like I was watching an action movie or something. I'm not nearly this organized yet, but I aspire to be. I'm taking notes!
It looks great! Trying to organize the necessary odds and ends (and stacks of paper) in our life is always a challenge for me. I love the file drawer idea!
I love love your space! We are in the middle of some kitchen "tweaking" and hava a similar desk setup. This has given me some great ideas!
Thank you thank you!
Love this post. You're right, everyone needs a command center. I wish I had an area in our kitchen like this.
Love your command center. We are still working out our system. We have a system for keys and an outbox of sorts (a bag on a hook by the door). But, there isn't enough room for paperwork/etc. in our kitchen. In my dream kitchen, I would have an area to do this. Unforutnately, we are too lazy to walk to our official paperwork center in the office.
This post had me practically rolling in the floor laughing! You are so right, this is what every house needs but honestly, I can't find a place for it in my home! I guess that's why I'm so unorganized! I'm going to work on establishing one of these some way, some how. Surely there is room some where!
That is an amaing Home central command spot! I still need to set one up, I plan to do so based on your amazing post and inspirion! Thanks!
Ugh. Your command center is beautiful and CLEAN. Ours consists of two baskets on the island. Not a good plan, when no one seems to see the baskets, and ends up throwing everything on the island. Clutter, clutter, everywhere!
Love your command center...I really need something like this also...great idea!
I love that! I love organizational systems and ideas, I often try 3 a year. The problem I have? Getting my husband to follow a scheduling system. For example, I had to explain our weekend plans 3 times to him- today only. :p
I. LOVE. THIS. IDEA!!! I have to do this to my closet office. Thanks for the tips and for breaking it down.
I love it! I so wish I had something like this. I do have a system, but it's not neat & organized, and in a cute little place like yours is. :)
Oh how I need this space. My husband and his work at home biz has taken over the office, so I now have a corner in the kitchen and really need to get it together.
I love your command center. You've inspired me♥
nope - I DON'T have something "similar." But my family would love a "command center." I have an engineering degree - aren't I supposed to be organized? I have one calendar - and I have a difficult time getting my email appointments (computer in office) to my calendar (on the wall in the kitchen). I have a key hook - but my husband refuses to use it. I have a beautiful hall buffet which stays cluttered with mail. But I DO throw out the junk before the bills hit the buffet.
THANK YOU for the inspiration!!!! And my family thanks you, too.!
This is a great idea! I love it!
Thanks for stopping by the other day!
Oh I LOVED this post!! I have been wanting to do this forever but haven't yet. Your command center is JUST RIGHT. I so enjoyed reading the how to's on it. Thank you for the pics and for sharing!
Can we say...JEALOUS!!!!
You rock...I wish I was half this organized!
Wow! No, I have nothing even remotely similar! *sniff sniff* In my house, the keys are always lost which means we are most always LATE wherever we go. The mail ends up wherever my husband opening it and stuff to return most always gets lost and forgotten. I'm feeling the need to get organized, you've inspired me!
oh man, I really needed this post today... working on ours right now.. yours is sooo cool!
Thanks for posting it! it's a big help and I got lots of ideas!
I definitely agree - a command center is must have. You have lots of great ideas and tips - Thanks!
Chelsea
I never thought about having an "outbox". GENIUS! I can't tell you how many times we've forgotten to return a dvd or something b/c it's not right by the door as we leave.
Your command center is fit to run a small country!
I have one in my kitchen. My desk is somewhat similar to yours except that now my kids are teens to I had to rearrange recently to accomodate a shared computer - This way I can cook dinner and keep an eye on them plus I have all my recipes, calendars, school grades, etc right there. Oh and under my desk I keep a small paper shredder and my dh has the job of shredding the junk mail. (He loves to shred stuff) lol.
This is a great idea! I need to try something similiar for my household. Thanks for sharing.
Looks good! I think (hope!) this is the ONE thing all families struggle with, not just me. There's such an influx of 'stuff' into the house every day it can get out of control quickly - especially when the kids are in school!
I love this! We don't have an official command center, but we need one. Our house just lacks a central place for one, but I'll figure it out.
I love how neat everything looks! I firmly believe that everything has a place. I like your files-that's a great idea.
I have been a follower for a while.
Thanks for sharing!!!
Check out my tips including how to get pen off and couch!
