Finally

I've been trying to cozy up some rooms, feather my nest, whatever you want to call it, for awhile. I thought these windows REALLY needed some softening. We paid good money for the blinds, but I still wanted drapes. Have you ever priced those out? Even if you shop at Walmart, after 5 drapes and all the hardware for them, they really add up. So, I went on the search. I knew I wanted only 24" rods, I didn't need them to close, I never planned on having them close. This was absolutely ridiculous to Tom, but it's what I wanted. I finally found a set for $12 at Hobby Lobby that I thought would work. I saved my 40% off coupons and went in every week, used my coupon until I got what I wanted. It took awhile, sure, but that's the way I did it. Then I spray painted them black, and got Tom to chop them down to the length I wanted. He even jerry-rigged a rod to turn 90 degrees for me (I need to touch up the paint, but I was getting anxious to finally get them up.).
The drapes are 95" - I found them at Target and thought they were perfect. I wanted them subtle, but softening. It's no surprise that it's a neutral color in the brown shade, huh?
Well, finally, after weeks I got them up and love the difference they make! Even Tom complimented them, which is huge in my book. After all the ridiculing and second guessing, you think he'd finally start to trust. Well, here's hoping!
Before - dark picture and complete with my own personal Jedi:
After - keeping it real with the dumped out toys:

It's surprising what drapes can do for a room. I now insist on having something on my windows to soften them up. If I can't find what I want, I go get fabric and make my own.

Hi Laurel,

I absolutely LOVE the drapes!!!! I have also been on the drape hunt. I see so many blogs with beautiful ones and I am just not confident enough to mix the material like they do. I have been thinking about a more neutral color like you have used or even the burlap type material. They look great....wonderful job!♥

Hello there! I'm new to your blog (MMB - what else?) and I saw your blog title and I love anything that has to do with ducks (check out my last name on my blog and you'll see why), but I have to say, I love what your new drapes have done for your room! So simple, and so elegant, and it really completes the room. Congratulations!

Those look so great....can't even believe how much more "decorated" and put together the room looks. And I love that you did it on a budget and took your time. I know that must have taken a lot of patience.
Beautiful!

I love the rods - you are so clever to have them short, don't think I would have ever thought of that, or the right-angled one in the corner! I have white wood blinds in all my windows & did get around to curtain-ing them all - although when I take them down to clean I love the windows bare as well! Fickle me...thanks for sharing!

They look great. They soften the whole room, add texture and depth and you didn't spend an arm and a leg. Bravo.

That looks awesome! I agree with the "even if you shop at Walmart" part. I bought some drapes, etc. there in January and Oh MY! Did it add up. I love that look though.

Hi...saw you over at Buzzings. I used to live in Highlands Ranch. Oh the memories of putting in my new yard.

I really like your curtains! I did something very similar in my family room. We have a HUGE 4 window windowseat and I end capped it with curtains! Very much like you did and I love it!

Those really look great. Perfect touch for your windows. And the husband? If he's like mine, he'll continue to question EVERY design idea, then LOVE it when it's done!

Laurel, I LOVE what you did - honestly, never thought of doing something like that! My husband would like them too because he thinks my drapes cover too much of the sunlight coming in. And I am with you on the Hobby Lobby rods - it just makes us feel better when we know we have saved and that we can save. No matter how long it takes! As always, great inspiration!

looks fabulous! I love the mini rods...they look perfect! I am on the other end of frugality...couldn't afford blinds so hit walmart's clearance and found enough curtains for the whole house!

I don't know anything about the follow feature, but I'm going to figure it out just to get an extra entry! (I actually really don't get it - do you get something special for "following" as opposed to google reader subscribing?).

I love this pillow, you are so so talented!

yay, lovely job! It does make the room look soft and cozy. My hubby does the same thing says 'oh, just leave it,' or don't put yourself out - but when it's done he really does appreciate it. ;)

I am on the hunt for drapes that have a similar texture to this in a crisp white -- and that won't cost me a fortune...

These look really nice!
